Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek Overview

The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek takes you to one of Nepal’s most peaceful and beautiful places, the Dolpo region in western Nepal. This trek is famous for its deep turquoise lake, traditional Bon culture, and quiet mountain trails that feel untouched by time.

The trek begins with a short flight to Juphal, the gateway to Dolpo, followed by days of walking through green forests, waterfalls, and rocky trails along the Phoksundo River. As you reach the highland village of Ringmo, the view of the blue-green lake surrounded by cliffs and snow-capped peaks feels truly magical.

Unlike many busy trekking routes in Nepal, the Shey Phoksundo trek is still quiet and less crowded. You’ll walk through small villages where people live a simple lifestyle, influenced by the ancient Bon religion, which came before Buddhism. Every turn of the trail offers something different, from deep valleys and hanging bridges to dry highlands that look almost like Tibet.

The trek is suitable for anyone with normal fitness who enjoys nature, culture, and peaceful walks away from tourist crowds. It’s not only about reaching the lake but also about feeling the slow rhythm of life in Dolpo, where tradition and nature still live side by side.

How Difficult Is the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek?

The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is considered a moderate trek, which means it’s suitable for most people with normal fitness levels. You don’t need any special training or previous trekking experience, but being active and comfortable walking for several hours a day will make your trek more enjoyable.

Most of the trail goes through gentle up-and-down paths along rivers, forests, and villages. There are some long walking days and gradual climbs, especially as you get closer to Phoksundo Lake, but there are no high passes or very steep sections like in other Himalayan treks. The highest point of the trek is around 3,611 meters, which is much lower than high-altitude treks such as Everest Base Camp Trek or Annapurna Circuit Trek.

You will be walking for about5–6 hours a dayon average, taking plenty of breaks to rest, enjoy tea, and soak in the scenery. The air gets cooler and thinner at higher altitudes, so walking slowly and staying hydrated helps you adjust easily.

The main challenge of this trek is its remoteness, as Dolpo is one of Nepal’s least developed areas. Services are simple, and you may not find luxuries like hot showers or Wi-Fi every day.

So, if you’re someone who enjoys walking in nature, experiencing local culture, and doesn’t mind basic comfort, the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is absolutely for you.

Is Shey Phoksundo Trek Suitable for You?

Yes, the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is suitable for anyone who enjoys walking, nature, and cultural experiences rather than chasing high mountains or challenging climbs. You don’t need to be an expert trekker, a normal level of fitness and a positive mindset are more than enough.

If you can walk 5 to 6 hours a day at a steady pace, you can comfortably complete this trek. It’s also a great choice for those who prefer peaceful, less crowded trails, where you can truly connect with the environment and local life. The paths are not too steep or technical, but there are some ups and downs, especially near Jharna and as you reach Phoksundo Lake.

The remoteness of Dolpo means facilities are basic, rooms are simple, and food choices are limited compared to other regions like Annapurna or Everest. But that’s part of the adventure. You’ll stay in local teahouses and eat freshly cooked Nepali meals, which adds to the authentic village experience.

The water is so clear and still that it mirrors the nearby cliffs and snowy mountains. You can also visit the Tshowa Monastery, an ancient Bon monastery that sits on a ridge above the lake. The monastery is over 900 years old and gives a deep insight into the spiritual life of the Dolpo people.

Useful Information

Best Time to Visit Shey Phoksundo Lake – When Should You Go?

The best time to visit Shey Phoksundo Lake is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer the clearest skies, comfortable temperatures, and the best views of the turquoise lake and surrounding mountains.

During spring, the trail becomes lively with blooming rhododendrons, and the weather is pleasantly warm in the lower areas. It is one of the most beautiful times to see Dolpo’s forests and valleys at their greenest.

In autumn, the air is fresh and dry, making the scenery look extra sharp and colorful. This is also the time when local people are busy with harvest and village festivals, giving trekkers a glimpse into their traditional way of life.

The summer/monsoon months (June to August) bring more rain in the lower sections, but Dolpo lies in the rain shadow area, so it receives far less rainfall than other parts of Nepal. The landscape turns lush and green, and if you don’t mind light rain or muddy trails, trekking is still possible.

Winter (December to February) is cold, especially at higher elevations, and some teahouses may close. However, if you’re well-prepared for the cold and want complete peace, winter offers a very quiet and beautiful experience.

So, while you can trek to Shey Phoksundo Lake throughout most of the year, spring and autumn remain the most comfortable and scenic times for most travelers.

Necessary Permits for Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek

To trek in the Dolpo region and visit Shey Phoksundo Lake, you’ll need a few permits issued by the Government of Nepal. These permits help manage tourism in the restricted areas and support the conservation of the Shey Phoksundo National Park.

Here are the permits you’ll need:

1. Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

This is the main permit required for trekking in the Dolpo region. The area is considered a restricted zone to protect its culture and environment.

  • Cost: USD 20 per person per week

  • Issued by: Department of Immigration, Kathmandu

  • You will need to trek with a registered guide and through a government-authorized agency (individual trekking is not allowed).

2. Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit

This permit allows you to enter the protected national park area where the lake lies. The park is home to rare wildlife like blue sheep, musk deer, and even snow leopards.

  • Cost: NPR 3,000 per person (approx. USD 25)

  • Issued by: Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation

3. TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)

Currently, the TIMS card is not required for the Shey Phoksundo Lake trek. However, this rule may change in the future, as the government sometimes reintroduces the TIMS system for safety and record-keeping.

Note: Himalayan Joy Adventure will take care of all the necessary permits for you. You just need to provide a valid passport copy and passport-sized photos before the trek.

Accommodation, Meals & Transportation on the Shey Phoksundo Trek

Accommodation

During the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek, you will stay in local teahouses and lodges along the route. These are small, family-run places that offer a clean bed, warm blankets, and a cozy dining area where trekkers gather in the evening. The rooms are usually simple, with twin beds and shared toilets.

In Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, you’ll stay in comfortable tourist-standard hotels with private rooms and attached bathrooms. As you enter the Dolpo region, the facilities become more basic because it’s a remote area. But the warmth and hospitality of the locals make every stay memorable.

If you want, we can also arrange camping-style trekking for larger groups — where our team sets up tents, cooks fresh meals, and carries all the camping gear.

Meals

You’ll be served three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the trek.
Most teahouses offer a set menu with Nepali, Tibetan, and basic Western dishes.

Common meals include:

  • Breakfast: Tea/coffee, bread, eggs, porridge, or pancakes

  • Lunch: Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables), noodles, or fried rice

  • Dinner: Similar to lunch, often with soup or curry

Meals are simple but freshly cooked using local ingredients. Staying hydrated is very important, so drink plenty of water, tea, or soup throughout the day.

Transportation

The journey starts with a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by another short mountain flight to Juphal, the starting point of your trek. These flights offer stunning views of the hills and Himalayan ranges.

All ground transfers, such as airport pickups, hotel transfers, and local transportation, are included in the package. Our team will handle everything, so you can travel stress-free from the moment you arrive in Nepal.

Culture and Lifestyle of Dolpo Region – The Land of Bon Tradition

The Dolpo region is one of the most remote and culturally unique areas of Nepal. Life here feels like stepping back in time, where people still follow old traditions, live close to nature, and deeply respect their surroundings.

Many people in Dolpo practice the Bon religion, which existed before Buddhism. Bon followers believe in the power of nature, spirits, and the balance between humans and the earth. When you walk through villages, you’ll see prayer flags, stone walls (mani walls), and chortens decorated with colorful symbols — all representing peace and protection.

The local houses are built in a traditional Tibetan style, made of stone and mud with flat roofs. People depend mostly on farming, animal herding, and trade for their living. Because the area lies close to Tibet, Dolpo’s culture, language, and clothing share strong Tibetan roots. You will see people wearing long woolen robes called chubas, spinning prayer wheels, and speaking a local dialect mixed with Tibetan words.

Hospitality is a big part of Dolpo life. Even in small, simple villages, locals welcome visitors with tea and smiles. Life is slow and peaceful here — no rush, no noise — only the sound of wind, rivers, and the rhythm of daily life.

Exploring Dolpo isn’t just about reaching Shey Phoksundo Lake. It’s also about meeting people whose traditions and beliefs have remained pure and unchanged for centuries, and feeling a part of a world that lives in harmony with nature.

Important Travel Guidelines and Trekking Requirements

Before joining the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek, it’s good to know a few important things that will help you prepare well and enjoy your trip safely. Dolpo is one of Nepal’s most remote regions, so planning ahead makes a big difference.

Trekking Permits and Documents

All your trekking permits (Restricted Area and National Park Entry) will be arranged by Himalayan Joy Adventure before the trek. You’ll need to send us a passport copy and two passport-sized photos. It’s also a good idea to carry a few extra photos and a copy of your travel insurance policy while trekking.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory for this trek. Your policy should cover emergency medical evacuation, helicopter rescue, and altitude sickness treatment. Dolpo is remote, and hospitals are not available in the trekking areas, so being insured ensures safety in case of emergencies.

Health and Altitude

The highest point on this trek is around 3,611 meters at Shey Phoksundo Lake. Most people adjust well since the altitude gain is gradual. Walking slowly, drinking plenty of water, and resting when needed will help your body acclimatize naturally. If you feel dizzy, weak, or experience headaches, inform your guide immediately (our team is trained to assist you).

Packing and Clothing

Weather in Dolpo can change quickly. Bring warm clothes even in spring or autumn. A good sleeping bag, trekking shoes, rain jacket, hat, and gloves are important. We will provide a full packing list to help you prepare properly.

Domestic Flights and Delays

Flights to and from Juphal depend on weather conditions, and short delays are common due to strong winds or low visibility. If this happens, we will make all necessary arrangements and adjust the itinerary accordingly. Having one or two extra days in your schedule is always a smart idea.

Respect Local Culture

Dolpo people are kind and welcoming. Please respect local customs — always walk clockwise around chortens, ask before taking photos, and avoid touching religious objects without permission. Small gestures of respect go a long way here.

Tip: Bring a power bank and a reusable water bottle. Things like charging and hot showers may not be available everywhere, but the peace and natural beauty will make up for it a hundred times over.
